Mallory Rao is a designer and illustrator living in Toledo, Ohio.
Through research and communication with the OCHGE, I learned that the Holocaust is not only a historical tragedy; it is a contemporary issue. Due to a history of anti-Semitism, genocides and mass atrocities continue to be an enormous challenge for people who are victims of hate group ideologies. Through a brand identity designed to promote education about the precursors of the Holocaust and other genocides promoting tolerance and inclusion against their current societal implications, a significant impact can be made against discrimination and hatred today.
The logo I created incorporates three main themes that the OCHGE encompasses; education, inclusion, and religion. The logo captures education through the abstracted form of a book and the way the lines of the book interacts indicates the inclusion of all of the religions along with the individuals who have been affected by genocides. The religion can be found on the outer parts of the logo, the four lines symbolizing an abstract shape of the ends of a torah. The slab serif combined with the sans serif give a mix of the historic events of the genocide showing how we can learn from these events while the sans serif evokes a contemporary feel describing how we can prevent future genocides from occurring.
VIGILIX is an company that creates technology that detects service issues, initiates corrective actions, and alerts support managers to changing conditions for All-in-one Point of Sale (POS) solutions so that companies can remotely support the point-of-sale environment.
I created a landing page, banner gif for social media support and email distribution, a landing page, an email, and zipper mailer to support calls being made on behalf of VIGILIX. I used a triangle pattern to play off the logo which was incorporated in each piece as a mark and visual texture throughout the design.
TSC Printronix Auto ID is a manufacturer of barcode and label printers.
The first five slides are designs of an e-book created to sell and promote their RFID printers and considerations to make when you are implementing an RFID project.
The next two slides are the pages of a brochure for a new product and the layout that was used during every new product launch.
Beer bottle and Box Design, Medical Glove Box Design, and Ceramic Mugs
Beer Bottle/Box Design (Sea Beasts Brewery): Sea Beasts Brewery is a brand I created from scratch including a logo, labels, and a carrier. Within this carrier there are four kinds of craft beer. The style captures the deep sea creatures and the environment they can be found in. Each creature symbolizes a different style of beer. The illustrations were drawn and scanned into the computer for further refinement. The beer encompasses all of the information needed as if the product were to be produced and sold.
Glove Box Design - This box design was made for a glove manufacturing client that was looking to update their brand and incorporate their logo on the box for a new modern look that stands out from their competitors.
Ceramic Mugs - “Hot Keys” was a brand that I created for a line of mugs for Design lovers. Each mug has hot key commands from each of the Adobe programs. The mugs were store bought and then I fired them with a decal process along with a re-firing process in a ceramic kiln. The packaging has that same incorporation outside of them.
These social media graphics were designed to coincide with the emails and messaging that our sales team was calling about. Each spread shows a different client and their full span of social media materials and dimensions for that particular wave. The clients shown are:

Kaslly’s Kitchen is a family style diner with affordable breakfast an lunch options. The reason for redesigning the logo for the restaurant Kaslly’s Kitchen was because the logo is outdated and unappealing to the eye. Kaslly’s Kitchen’s logotype doesn’t speak to the fun and family-oriented restaurant that it is. The first logo was blue with the big K sharing the first letters of the two words. The word Kaslly’s goes up and over the mug icon while the word kitchen is typed out below.
Sign of the Times is an interactive design exhibition located in Imagination Station in downtown Toledo. Imagination Station is a non-profit science center that provides informal education to allow kids to learn in a more fun and involved environment. Sign of the times was a design that allowed kids to decode a message using icons. The theme of the collaboration piece was your ecological carbon footprint. All of the icons were made by individuals in my graphic design class at BGSU and the icon I developed was for the term urbanization. Urbanization is the increase in people that live in urban areas so the icon is depicting the process of tearing down trees so more buildings are able to be built. Shown is the brochure that was passed out during the time the exhibition was up which includes the hidden message allowing kids to learn and have fun in de-coding the phrase. On the wall is a display of the icons and message to allow kids to be able to interact and investigate all of the ins and outs of the carbon footprint.
Down Syndrome can be described as a congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect, causing intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities including short stature and a broad facial profile. It arises from a defect involving chromosome 21, usually an extra copy. Developmental Disabilities cause many difficulties in certain areas of daily life, especially in language, mobility, learning, self help, and independent living. Down syndrome affects approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States or about 6,000 births per year. Although it may be harder for people with down syndrome to achieve certain tasks as efficiently as someone who isn’t affect, they still deserve the same respect. Their disability is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual has, so it’s important to be considerate.
Sunshine’s mission is to create a sense of community that includes anyone among these very people, their families, friends, and staff. They provide this by offering a multitude of services that allow individuals with down syndrome to create and build relationships among each other. Celebrating differences, changing lives, and growing for the future, are goals that Sunshine wishes to achieve. They offer help in a variety of avenues. For example, they have three objectives that they aid in; life, work, and play. “Life” speaks to developing their capabilities to connect them to the people around them. They will receive 24-hour care and assistance, medically and social to overcome the challenges they may face. Work support speaks to helping each individual to search and find work that’s meaningful. They are taught necessary skills to complete this goal, while Sunshine offers them a place to work or grow if working outside of this realm isn’t possible. They are guaranteed a job, however severe their struggles may be. Some of the most critical job skills can include teamwork, respect, and patience. “Play” refers to the recreational support that Sunshine gives such as horse-back riding, swimming lessons, aquatic therapy for helping arthritis, and a sensory room where a resident can let go of all of the emotions and struggles they may be having at that time.
The key to reaching out about this issue and using the right touchpoints is important in invoking change. The touchpoints I will be creating aim to target places where the community is the most involved. A bus is a touchpoint that reaches a large audience because it touches around the entire community by circulating through the most popular places of interaction. A lot of individuals with down syndrome work in places like grocery stores or businesses where they can complete repetitive tasks, so creating a sidewalk stencil is beneficial to reach the right audience. Events like the Black Swamp Arts Festival is a great place to showcase the abilities of these students. A banner shows where these people can be seen.
